1955

Laminating Services, Inc. is founded

Charles Westray opens the company in a rented facility in Louisville, KY. The first two employees are Charles Morrow (sales) and John Tarullo (operations). 


1958

Robards Lane facility opens

The new location begins manufacturing Pliant Wood, a flexible wood veneer wallcovering.


1963-1967

Company expands into fabric-backed vinyl

  • Development begins on the Vin-L-Fab Wallcovering collection
  • First lamination and embossing line installed
  • First tint print line installed
  • First gravure print line installed 

1969

American Standard acquires LSI

The building products conglomerate merges LSI with Moderncoat to form a dedicated wallcovering division.


1974

LSI is purchased by employees and family

John Tarullo, Charles Morrow, and a small group of friends and family acquire the company from American Standard, refocusing on its leading brands, Pliant Wood and Vin-L-Fab.


1975

Vin-L-Fab Wallcovering launches

The collection is introduced to the market and promoted through a network of contract wallcovering distribution partners.


1977–1979

The Next Generation of Growth

  • Phil Tarullo joins the company
  • Robards Lane plant grows to accommodate increased vinyl wallcovering production and inventory
  • Product Specialties, Inc. opens in New Albany, IN, to expand production of wood veneer products
  • Vinyl film extrusion equipment is installed at the PSI facility, solidifying the company’s vertical integration strategy

1983-1988

Manufacturing Innovation

  • Advanced print, coat, lamination, emboss, and tint lines installed
  • 6-color in-register print equipment installed
  • Advanced packaging, wrapping, and labeling equipment added

1990s

Focus on Design & Innovation 

  • In-house design team established
  • In-house R&D team established
  • The company sells its wood veneer operations to focus on vinyl
  • Leadership in design and innovation accelerate significant market share gains

1999

Versa Wallcovering collection launches

Formerly known as Vin-L-Fab, the new brand drives accelerated sales through a strong regional distribution network.


2002

Company expands through strategic acquisitions

The Moderncote facility is acquired from Commercial Vinyl, along with the Plexus brand from Imperial Home Decor Group.

  • First and only post-consumer reclamation technology, Second-Look®, launches
  • First manufacturer to qualify for NSF342 Sustainable Wallcoverings standard
  • First product to be certified NSF342 Sustainable Wallcoverings
  • First-of-its-kind product, VersaGuard®, launched with enhanced durability and performance
  • The company adopts the Kaizen management model to drive continuous improvement

2015

Suzhou, China manufacturing facility opens

The new location opens to better serve the APAC and EMEA markets.


2017–2021

A Leader in Innovation & Sustainability

  • evo® PVC-free technology launches
  • World’s largest lines of PVC-free Wallcovering and Wall Protection launch
  • Versa leads industry efforts to establish Environmental and Health Product Declarations
  • Digital print technology is implemented to enhance gravure print capacities

2018

The company changes its name to Versa Designed Surfaces


2022–2024

Global Expansion

  • Netherlands manufacturing facility opens to serve Europe and Northern Africa
  • Sharjah, UAE, manufacturing facility opens to serve the Middle East, India, and Central Africa
  • Sales office opens in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to serve Latin America 

2024

  • Circon®, the industry’s first and only bio-sourced, carbon-neutral, recyclable vinyl wallcovering technology, launches
  • Circon wins Best of NeoCon Silver and Business Impact, Metropolis Likes, and the Wallcoverings Association (WA) Innovation Award
